Each and every morning, we awake hopefully feeling refreshed and renewed, and according to Jewish tradition, the first thing we do once opening our eyes is saying the prayer of Modeh Ani. Modeh Ani is a way to thank G-d for giving a new day, with new challenges and new rewards. The prayer is very short and goes as following:
Hebrew: מוֹדֶה אֲנִי לְפָנֶיךָ מֶלֶךְ חַי וְקַיָּם, שֶׁהֶחֱזַרְתָּ בִּי נִשְׁמָתִי בְּחֶמְלָה. רַבָּה אֱמוּנָתֶךָ.
English: I thank you, living and enduring king, for You have graciously returned my soul within me. Great is your faithfulness.
Modeh Ani has inspired many Jewish songs, going further than saying that G-d has just given back our souls. Many songs thank G-d for all He has provided the world with. We have clothing to protect us from the heat and from the cold, we have light to guide us throughout the day, we have people who love and appreciate us, there is rain to water the fields, and we are given the chance to live our lives to the fullest.
There is always something to be thankful for, whether big or small. Whenever you are feeling down, think about all the things you have, that were given to you, that make you who you are. Everyday is a gift that we should be grateful for, even the hard days which makes us stronger.
