A Look at the Past Year and Operation Swords of Iron, by the Numbers

As we commemorate the attacks of October 7th, 2023, and one year since the start of Operation Swords of Iron against Israel‘s enemies, we bring you some key statistics from the past year to help illustrate what the Israel Defense Forces have achieved and been up against – with some numbers that may shock or inspire you!

 

The IDF and the Israeli government have published extensive data regarding the October 7th attacks as well as the military's defenses of Israel and operations in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon over the past year.

Here are some of the most important statistics:

 

  • About 1,200 people were killed in Israel on October 7th, 2023, including over 800 civilians, 346 soldiers, and 66 police officers
  • Around 8,700 people were injured on that day
  • 251 people were taken hostage into Gaza, 97 of whom still remain in captivity today

 

 

  • Over 26,000 rockets, missiles, and drones have been fired into Israel over the past year, including at least 5,000 on October 7th alone
    • 13,200 of the 26,000 projectiles were fired from Gaza
    • 12,400 were fired from Lebanon
    • 60 were fired from Syria
    • 180 were fired from Yemen
    • 400 were fired from Iran

 

 

  • Around 17,000 Hamas terrorists and members of other militant groups have been killed in Gaza, in addition to 1,000 terrorists killed inside Israel itself following the October 7th attacks
  • The IDF has eliminated 8 Hamas brigade commanders, over 30 battalion commanders, and more than 165 company commanders
  • Approximately 40,300 military targets have been hit in the Gaza Strip
  • About 4,700 tunnel shafts were discovered by IDF troops
  • The IDF has interrogated around 7,000 terror suspects from Gaza
  • IDF special forces have rescued 8 hostages from Gaza, in addition to bodies of 34 hostages that were recovered through special operations and brought to Israel for burial

 

 

  • Nearly 11,000 Hezbollah positions have been targeted by the IDF in Lebanon, in response to near-daily rocket barrages on Israel since October 8th, 2023
  • At least 800 terror operatives have been killed in Lebanon, including 90 Hezbollah commanders and the head of the terror group, Hassan Nasrallah

 

  • IDF troops have arrested over 5,250 wanted terror suspects in the West Bank, including over 2,050 people affiliated with Hamas
  • Around 690 militants and terrorists have been killed in the West Bank

 

  • 728 IDF soldiers, reservists, and local security officers have been killed, and 4,576 have been wounded
